Legal Director Named to Pennsylvania Lawyers "Women of Distinction" List For 2010

Pennsylvania Innocence Project Legal Director Marissa Boyers Bluestine has been named by The Legal Intelligencer to its 2010 "Women of Distinction" list for women lawyers in Pennsylvania. The list includes 22 distinguished general counsel, judges, attorneys from large and small firms, public interest advocates and leading government attorneys. In citing Ms. Bluestine as a Woman of Distinction, the Intelligencer focused on Ms. Bluestine's achievements in the Project's first year of work, noting that since the Project began one year ago, "it has processed requests from over 1,600

inmates, trained at least 225 attorneys and 200 law students, and is investigating 32 plausible wrongful conviction claims." Citing the breadth of her experience, the Intelligencer notes that "Bluestine has worked in both the private and public sector: as a litigation associate at Duane Morris and as an assistant defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia for over ten years." The citation also reports that Bluestine "lectures across the state on issues relating to criminal defense" and advocates "for the expansion of voir dire, more detailed jury instructions and improved lineup procedures to avoid the occurrences of wrongful convictions." At the Pennsylvania Innocence Project's first anniversary celebration in May 2010, Ms. Bluestine recounted some of the Project's achievements in its first year, and noted that "most of those who seek our help have nowwhere else to turn, no one else to hear their cries for justice." More than 125 people joined in the celebration at the Independence Visitor Center in Philadelphia, and more than $85,000 was raised for the Project's work.
